BEST FOODS IN KOCHI

Kochi has always been a special place for me. Despite the fact that I am not from there, my experience as a student there was unforgettable. Kochi's allure was only enhanced by the friendly residents and intriguing cultural heritage.

Kochi dubbed the "Queen of the Arabian Sea," is possibly the clearest illustration of how cultural contacts in India leave a long-lasting mark that is then effortlessly interwoven into the local cultural fabric. But that's a discussion for another day.

Aside from its historical significance and numerous tourist attractions, Kochi's cuisine culture is absolutely unique.

Yes, there is a genuine and quite obsessive obsession with fish. There's a lot more to this city's culinary trails than meets the eye.

1. PAZHAM PORI AND BEEF CURRY

Those who have visited Kerala or have Malayali acquaintances will undoubtedly be familiar with Pazham Pori. Pazham Pori, which is similar to bhajji but made with ripe Nendran bananas, is possibly the most popular snack in the state and goes best with a hot cup of evening tea.

In Kochi, the fritter is served with a side dish that even Malayalis from all around the state find intriguing: beef curry!

This combo is not only uncommon but it can only be found in Sri Muruga Café, a little street shop. That is if you can get past the masses waiting for a piece of the action.

2. APPAM AND STEW

If you're wondering why I didn't mention this previously, it's because appam and stew are popular not just in Kerala, but throughout the country. This simple recipe, like Puttu and Kadala, is a home staple across the state, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions.

The vegetable/chicken/mutton stew, cooked in coconut milk and seasoned with ground black pepper, has an amazing flavor that you must experience with Appam. And these can be found in any restaurant in Kochi!

3. FISH MOLLY

Fish Molly, also known as fish molee, is another traditional Kochi dish that has worldwide popularity. The adaptability of this meal, which is always in demand by tourists, lies in its mild flavors, as opposed to the spicy flavors of most fish curries in Kerala.

The fish is cooked to perfection and tastes exquisite with appam, with faint undertones of green chilies and black peppers that are pleasantly overshadowed by the creamy texture of coconut milk. This amazing dish can be found at every restaurant in Kochi, so give it a try!

4. KURUKKU KALAN

Kurukku Kalan is a vegetarian meal prepared with thick curd and toasted raw banana or yam that is absolutely unique to Kochi. This dish, which is a staple of every Sadhya, is best served with hot rice. This is a must-try for vegetarians who want to experience the local meat-free dishes because of the skill with which the curd is infused with a tempered combination of spices and curry leaves.
